Mira Mesa Community Champions

CALL TO ACTION - Deliver the Promised Mira Mesa Community Park Renovations and Expansions.

– Mira Mesa March 2024

A Call to Action

If we want Mira Mesa Community Park to reflect our community’s wishes, we need to tell the San Diego City Council. They will be voting on the current plan, which does NOT include an added full-sized gym/recreation center.

Please send an email to our city officials to insist on the completion of the Mira Mesa Community Park Phase 2 renovations and the Phase 3 expansion of the Gil Johnson Recreation Center. We have been waiting over 20-years for these long-awaited upgrades, and during that time Mira Mesa has outgrown our current resources which are neglected and unable to handle the community needs. No more delays! No more broken promises!

Deliver the Promised Mira Mesa Community Park Expansion & Renovations.

Dear San Diego City Officials:

I’m writing to you today to urge you to follow through on the promised improvements to Mira Mesa Community Park, our Central Park in the heart of Mira Mesa, by delivering the following:

  1. Expansion of the Phase 3 improvements to the Gil Johnson Recreation Center must include what was originally promised to the community over the last 20-years: Construction of a new 15,000 sq ft facility adjacent to the current Gil Johnson Recreation Center.
  2. Prioritize funding and building of the new recreation center in Mira Mesa Community Park, our Central Park, with a full-sized gymnasium, as per the General Development Plan published on the City of San Diego’s website.
  3. Build the Mira Mesa Swimming Pool in Mira Mesa Community Park as part of the already funded Phase 2 renovations.
  4. Renovate and upgrade the existing Gil Johnson Recreation Center building as promised.
  5. Remove the appropriation of $1 million dollars from the Mira Mesa Community Fund to fill the funding gap for the Phase 2 renovations of Mira Mesa Community Park. This money is to be used for public improvements in Mira Mesa as identified by the community including previously earmarked funds for the development of Arts and Culture by adding a Performing Arts and Auditorium in the Mira Mesa Epicentre.
  6. Expedite and approve the bidding process for the Phase 2 renovation at Mira Mesa Community Park so construction begins during the summer of 2024.

The Mira Mesa community has been patiently waiting for these improved promises for over 20-years, while we watch neighboring communities, with less people and less industry, build new parks and recreational facilities. Now it’s Mira Mesa’s turn to have new resources brought to one of San Diego’s fastest growing and most populated neighborhoods. We have waited long enough. We deserve better in Mira Mesa from our City, for our youth, and for our community.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Sincerely,
